Corneal examination

What is meant by the examination of the cornea of the eye?

In this section, advanced facilities and equipment enable a very precise and comprehensive evaluation of the internal structure of the eye. In other words, this service utilizes various tests to analyze and examine the structure of the eye. The following list provides some of the scans performed in the corneal examination service.

List of analyses for corneal examination

Continuing, here is a list of the scans conducted in the corneal examination service.

A- Orbscan and Pentacam

Through this device, corneal topography, which includes the overall structure of the cornea, such as its surface power, thickness, and the shape of its front and back portions, is determined.

B- Pachymetry

Pachymetry is a method in which the thickness of the cornea is measured using ultrasound waves. Pachymetry is a fundamental and essential step before refractive surgeries such as LASIK because in these types of surgeries, a portion of the corneal tissue is removed.

C- Topography

In this method, by sending illuminated rings to the corneal surface and then receiving the reflections of these rings and analyzing the acquired data, the corneal topography map can identify any disorders in the cornea, such as keratoconus, corneal scars, and corneal irregularities. This method is a crucial step for individuals undergoing refractive error correction surgeries like LASIK. Additionally, corneal topography may be necessary for post-operative follow-up in some individuals.

D- Eye biometry

With this device, information related to various components of the eye’s optical system can be measured. Currently, it is the most accurate device for calculating corneal thickness, the depth of the anterior chamber, the thickness of the eye’s lens, and the calculation of intraocular lens power for cataract surgery.

E- Tonometry

In ophthalmology, tonometry or eye pressure measurement is a method used by eye care specialists to determine the pressure of the fluid inside the eye. This test is one of the most important methods for diagnosing glaucoma, a condition where high eye pressure can lead to vision damage and, ultimately, blindness if left untreated. For this reason, it is recommended that individuals over 40 years old undergo this test every 3 to 5 years to prevent the onset of glaucoma.
